The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine, Roper Hall, has been selected by Engineering News-Record Southeast as Best Project, Higher Education/Research. Bennett & Pless is proud to be part of this project!
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill faced significant challenges with its outdated School of Medicine facility, Berryhill Hall, which was built in 1970. To address these issues, UNC-Chapel Hill embarked on an ambitious project to demolish and replace Berryhill Hall with Roper Hall, a state-of-the-art, 172,000 square-foot facility that integrates the UNC School of Medicine and the UNC Health system.
Named for longtime dean Dr. Bill Roper, the future-focused medical education facility solidifies the UNC School of Medicine as a leading global public research university. The building’s innovative design incorporates advanced learning, group collaboration and team-based learning spaces with integrated simulation centers, clinical exam rooms, and a 240-seat Active Learning Center to train new generations of physicians. A striking, two-story atrium opens to an exterior plaza with connectivity to the courtyard and café space shared with the adjacent Brinkhaus-Bullitt Hall.
Roper Hall embraces dynamic and active learning with sixteen seminar rooms and six medium-sized classrooms, replacing traditional lecture halls. The learning space includes anatomy and microbiology labs, as well as virtual visualization facilities. A medical student commons, learning bars, and group and individual study rooms foster a strong sense of community. The campus is a vibrant hub for collaboration and enhanced connections between medical students at Chapel Hill and those at satellite campus locations.
